Barkings Comments Upgrade

Last week we started getting our first comment spam here on Barkings (aww, we’re growing up!), so we did some minor upgrades to our CMS (Content Management System; which, by the way, is the excellent Textpattern) on Monday evening.

One of the things we’ve done is implemented image verification to prevent comment spam. Basically, you’ll be asked to enter a verification code from an image such as the following before you can post your comment:

We will be developing a more customized and hopefully easier (to read) solution in the future, but for now it’ll keep Barkings fee of comment spam.

Don’t worry, if you can’t figure out the alphanumeric characters in the image even after three tries it’ll still put your comment in our comment queue for moderation. We’ll be checking the comment queue fairly regularly and will happily make anyone’s comments visible that didn’t make it through. You’ll have to work pretty hard to make us think your comment is just spam!

  • iPad Tricorder + Happy Birthday Carl!

Today is our amazing technician Carl Grasso’s birthday. Carl is great guy and an avowed sci fi fan. He has one of the coolest iPad mods I’ve seen. He took a black Verso case and affixed the classic (and classy looking) Star Fleet insignia from Star Trek on the outside. On the inside, he’s running an, er, modified version of the iPad that looks like a Star Trek Tricorder. Images below.

Happy birthday to Carl! And we have to say it: live long and prosper!
