What to Do With a Dead iPod

I read an interesting article this weekend, over at Kirk McElhearn’s blog, about what to do with a dead iPod. He has some great suggestions, and there are a couple of tongue-in-cheek follow up posts by other readers.

It’s a sad, sad day when you realize that your trusty old iPod just isn’t going to pull through, and it’s ultimate end is imminent.

Here at Small Dog, we don’t exactly have burial or cremation services for deceased iPods, but we do have a sort of organ-donation program: if your iPod is truly dead, Small Dog will accept it as a scrap-parts unit. We will determine if there are parts that can be salvaged, and will issue you a store credit for $25. Read about this by clicking here.

We also have a recycling program for computers, printers, and other electronic devices. The main goal of this program is to keep toxic elements such as lead and mercury out of our landfills. Some of the computer’s metal and plastic can also be recycled.

This reminds me of the saying that “Old computer programers never die, they just byte the dust.” Or, “Old hippies never die, they just smell that way (Rob?)” Or, “old lawyers never die, they just lose their briefs.” Please stop me. Please.

There is also a great company in Utah called BrokenIpods.com. They can actually fix most iPods, so it’s worth giving them a call or sending them an email. Learn about their company by clicking here.
