QuickBooks 2006/2007 Bug: Users Beware!

UPDATE: Intuit has fixed the issue. Read more here.

When I first got the email mentioning a QuickBooks bug that deletes EVERYTHING on the user’s desktop, I thought it was spam.

However, it appears that this does indeed exist. If you are a QuickBooks user, please read the following information from our Service Operations Manager, Matt Klein:

It has come to our attention that a bug in a recent update to Quickbooks 2006 and 2007 can cause the unintended deletion of your Desktop folder. Please DO NOT USE QUICKBOOKS until Intuit releases a patch for this issue.

If you must use this program immediately, it is imperative that you back up your desktop folder to an external hard drive and move the contents of your desktop to another location on your hard drive.

Whether or not you’ve been affected by this issue, the latest developments and all details can be tracked here:

http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/dosearch.aspx?kbid=1009249

You may also request that Intuit contact you directly once a solid solution is available.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Intuit can be reached at 1-877-683-3280, and while we are unable to help with this issue, Small Dog technical support can be reached at 1-800-511-6227×605.

Our service departments may be able to recover lost desktop data; if this is needed, you must shut down your computer immediately (the longer it’s on the less likely the chances of recovery) and bring it in to either of our stores.

Thanks to Katie, for first warning of the bug (you were right!)
Thanks to TUAW, for running the story and confirming this does exist. Read more here.
Thanks to Matt, for offering information and solutions to QuickBooks users regarding this issue.
And thanks to Shane at MacSuperstore who originally brought this to our attention.
