Internet Explorer on the Mac, Part 2

Currently, Internet Explorer is not made for the Mac, but there are still some sites that require and/or prefer it. Ed has written in past issues of Kibbles (#582) about alternate ways to view sites that only render using Internet Explorer, since this seems to be a popular topic.

With Safari 3 (I’m on 3.1.2), there’s another way. Upon following a tip from Nixtechnica, I tried the following settings:

1. Open Preferences in Safari
2. Under the Advanced tab, check “Show Develop menu in menu bar”
3. Click the Develop menu in the Safari menu bar, and choose Develop > User Agent > Internet Explorer 7.0
4. Try using the IE-compatible website

I tried this using our Health Care website (which says it “works best” on Internet Explorer), and it logged me in perfectly.

Let me know if there are sites you know of that require/prefer IE. AND, definitely let us know if this tip did the trick!

You really can’t beat the ease of Drobo. It’s like a “RAID for Dummies,” without the derogatory connotation, of course. Basically, it’s a super-simple backup solution that you don’t have to be a techie to understand.

Drobo can hold up to four hard drives (in any capacity combination) to make sure all of your valuable data is protected. “Read more about Drobo here.”:http://www.drobo.com/ Be sure you take the video tour (and not just because we share the same name–it’s really informative)!

  • _Dear Friends,_

It’s not quite time to put the motorcycles away for the winter, but we’ve been doing a lot of chores. The strawberries have straw ready to cover them for the winter, the garden is roto-tilled and we’ve taken all the screen doors and windows down. Even though the weather is nice and warm this week, the patio furniture is stacked up in the shed, and we are burning wood on the these cold nights. I rode up to my old haunting grounds in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont last week and it was almost “stick season” up there.

The Apple notebook event has been confirmed for October 14th by invitations that have gone out to the press, and speculation is mounting as to what Apple might reveal. We will bring you all the details next week in Tech Tails and Kibbles & Bytes. The rumor sites are all abuzz with speculation and out-of-focus supposed spy shots. It is amazing that Apple can generate this much buzz over a product introduction. Can you name any other computer company that has this much anticipation or press coverage?

The article about me came out in Vermont Business Magazine. It is a long write-up and a bit flattering; you will probably learn more than you want to about me! Read the story at “Vermont Business Magazine’s website.”:http://vermontbusinessmagazine.com/

Everyone is giving me condolence calls and emails about the Cubs–yet again–choking in the playoffs. That’s two straight years in a row that they have been eliminated in the first round. As a long-time Cubs fan, I am used to that disappointment; however, I have some faith in my team as they were by no means a bottom-dweller and just “wait until next year!”

  • MAC TREAT #60: Screenshots That Include Your Mouse

Last week, I wrote about Googling (I love how that’s a verb now) the problem I had with the Illustrator icon. Well, I found the answer to my problem, as well as a few other nuggets of information–specifically a way to take a screenshot with the mouse included.

The tip comes from Anil at “Nixtechnica”:http://nixtechnica.blogspot.com, a fellow Mac enthusiast. Here’s how you do it:

    * In Grab, open Preferences
    * Select the mouse icon of your choice

That’s it! This can come in very handy when the mouse is an integral part of the equation.

However… I have yet to figure out a way to capture the mouse in a screenshot if it has a unique application icon (such as in Illustrator, when the mouse pointer turned into a pencil with a line through it. I was not able to capture the icon at all.)

I’ll do some more research on it and get back to you!
