  • Happy Apple Christmas!

This is always one of the most exciting weeks of the year for us Apple-fanatics, but it’s particularly exciting that so many products were released during yesterday’s WWDC keynote. Speedy new iPhones, a full upgrade of Apple’s portable line, __and__ the release of a jam-packed exciting new operating system!! I couldn’t be more excited (and my bank account couldn’t be more frightened).

Don and Matt are out on the west coast representing Small Dog and getting the skinny on all the new goodies. Check our “blog”:http://blog.smalldog.com/ and “Twitter”:http://twitter.com/hellosmalldog for the latest updates from WWDC.

Aside from the booming upgrades at Apple, we were blessed yesterday with a gorgeous reminder that Spring is in full bloom and Summer is on the way. In my afternoon walk with Toby, we passed a woman playing guitar and singing on a rock in the middle of the Mad River while a father and his son kayaked by. There’s a sense of freedom in the Green Mountains that is invigorating and inspiring. I’m really not sure why anyone would choose to live anywhere else.

So, for everyone glued to their computer screens checking the latest updates from WWDC, let this be just a little reminder to take a break and enjoy this awesome season… and then refresh Digg a few more times. 😉

    Thanks for reading!

  • WWDC 2009 Recap: New MacBook Pros

With machine gun delivery, Phil Schiller unveiled a whole new paradigm for Apple’s notebooks yesterday at WWDC (World Wide Developer’s Conference). All unibody aluminum Apple notebooks have been substantially upgraded AND are being offered at lower prices–up to $300 less than before.

    *13″ MacBook Pro* (formerly MacBook)
The biggest news is that the 13″ unibody MacBook will now be known as the MacBook Pro.

Upgrades to the 13-inch MacBook Pro include the return of the FireWire to the smaller notebook size. This will be a FireWire 800 port, which can easily be adapted for FireWire 400 devices, including cameras and hard drives.

Other upgrades include the inclusion of an SD card slot (first time ever for Apple, and a boon to photographers everywhere), a seven hour built-in battery, illuminated keyboards across the board, and an improved LED-backlit display with 60 percent greater color gamut.

The new 13″ MacBook Pro can take up to 8GB RAM and has the option to factory install a 7200 RPM 500GB hard drive. The 13″ MacBook Pro still uses the 256MB Intel 9400M graphics card.

Prices range from *$1,199 to $1,499* in standard configurations.

    *15″ MacBook Pro*
The new 15-inch MacBook Pro now features a seven hour built-in battery, an SD card slot, an improved LED-backlit display with 60 percent greater color gamut and 4GB of RAM across the line at an entry price $300 less than before.

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is available in three models:

    * A 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 250GB hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics for a new entry price of *$1,699*
    * A 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 320GB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics for *$1,999*
    * A 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo system with a 500GB hard drive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics for *$2,299*

    *17″ MacBook Pro*
Meanwhile the, 17-inch MacBook Pro, which includes an eight hour built-in battery, an ExpressCard slot, LED-backlit display, 4GB of RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and 9600M GT graphics, has been updated to include a faster 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a larger 500GB hard drive.

Price: *$2,499,* which is $300 less than before.

The current line of MacBook Pros is now more affordable than ever, with some models up to $300 less than the previous generation. These are also the industry’s greenest notebook lineup–every Mac notebook achieves EPEAT* Gold status and meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements, setting a new standard for environmentally-friendly notebook design.

  • Tip of the Week: Hotel Wireless

Whenever I travel, I make a point of staying at hotels that offer internet access. Most of them offer both wired and wireless connectivity, but very often the wireless is very slow. I tried to email Ed a photo of the Moscone Center here in San Francisco yesterday, but my connection was so bad that mail would time out every time I tried to send the half-megabyte picture.

I know that my hotel has 802.11 a/b/g capability, and also that Apple puts up its employees here. We’re a bandwidth-hungry bunch. With so many people trying to use the wireless network at once, it slowed down to the point of being completely unusable. I looked in a drawer in the room and found an ethernet cable and plugged it into the data port on the room’s phone. I turned off AirPort on my MacBook Pro and was delighted to discover super-fast connectivity!

So, this week’s tip: bring an ethernet cable with you whenever you’ll be staying in a hotel. Odds are the hotel will have a data port you can use if the wireless isn’t good enough. I knew there’s a reason they charge $39 for that cable!
