Lights…Camera…iPhone!

One of the many great features of the iPhone 4 is the built-in video camera which has the ability to shoot in 720p HD at 30 frames per second. Weighing in at 137 grams, the iPhone 4 is fifty-six times lighter than a traditional digital HD movie camera (such as the Arri Alexa). It is due to this portability that South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has shot his new film “Paranmanjang” (“Night Fishing”) using only the iPhone 4. “From hunting for a film location, shooting auditions, to doing a documentary on the filming process, everything was shot with the iPhone 4,” Park told reporters at a press screening.

Park, best known in the US for his film “Oldboy”, says that he was able to get shots and angles that he otherwise wouldn’t be able to get thanks to the small size of the iPhone and his access to multiple units. For certain shots, ten iPhones were used simultaneously. Park says that he hopes that this film will inspire other filmmakers and allow them to see the artistic possibilities available to them using a widely available handheld device. The film, which runs about half an hour and cost $133,000 to make, will hit theaters in South Korea on January 27th.
