International Women's Day Turns 100

This past Wednesday marked the 100th observation of International Women’s Day (IWD), a day for recognizing women’s achievements and campaigning for continued global advancement in women’s rights, health, safety, and suffrage. Rallies, conferences, and informational discussions made up just a few of the IWD events organized and co-sponsored by the United Nations, the official sponsor of IWD. This year’s IWD theme was “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.”

To commemorate IWD, I am spotlighting Andrea Jung, a current member of Apple’s board of directors. Jung is Chairman and CEO of Avon Products and has served on Apple’s BoD since 2008. Forbes has named Jung, a graduate of Princeton University, as one of the world’s 100 most powerful women every year since 2004, the year the magazine began the list.

Jung is an advocate for women’s health and in 2000 received the Award for Distinguished Service from Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. The award recognized her contributions to women’s health, including her role in expanding Avon’s Worldwide Fund for Women’s Health. Currently, under Jung’s leadership, Avon’s philanthropic mission includes two core programs: Breast Cancer Crusade and Speak Out Against Domestic Violence. The homepage for the Avon Foundation for Women features a quote from Jung that sums up her philosophy on the numerous programs for women she has instituted and helped develop: “When we empower women, we change the world.”

Here at Small Dog Electronics we also support women’s health through matching donations to Planned Parenthood. Click here to learn more about SDE’s charitable giving program.
