Motion 5 and Compressor 4 Overview

Supplementing the release of Final Cut Pro X, Apple yesterday debuted new versions of its popular Motion and Compressor post production tools. Previously only accessible as part of the Final Cut Studio software suite, both applications are now available individually for $49.99 apiece in the Mac App Store.

Motion, Apple’s application for editing motion graphics and creating visual effects, includes a redesigned interface and many additional new features. Now in its 5th iteration, the app—considered by many a must have companion to FCP—benefits from a single window UI, Smart Motion Templates, Parameter Rigs and more. The combination of simple yet powerful tools and reworked interface make Motion 5 simpler and easier to use than ever before.

The updated Motion GUI was designed alongside Final Cut Pro X to deliver a unified experience and make it easy to switch between the two programs. The darker look of both apps serves to enhance color perception while editing, and the inclusion of more onscreen filters and controls makes using the software more intuitive.

Smart Motion Templates, Parameter Rigs and Editable Final Cut Pro Templates are all designed to save users time by streamlining workflow and eliminating repetitive steps. All three features integrate seamlessly between the two titles making edits and fine tuning quicker than ever. Motion 5 also features Easy Chroma Keying—making creating chroma keys much easier to create. Users can create a key for most projects by simply dragging and dropping the Keying filter.

Developed alongside Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 is 64-bit and takes full advantage of multicore Mac hardware. Based on the same modern standards as its counterpart programs, Motion utilizes Grand Central Dispatch, Cocoa foundation and GPU utilization to deliver stunning performance on compatible machines.

Compressor 4 builds on Final Cut Pro X’s included export settings allowing users to modify and develop custom settings to suit their needs. Often the final step in the post production process, Compressor 4 includes more options than ever before, almost guaranteeing a project will be output to an individual’s specifications.

With custom export for Final Cut Pro, users can easily send FCP projects to Compressor and choose from a variety of parameters including codecs, file sizes and frame rates. Additionally, Compressor supports HHTP live streaming and includes built-in distributed encoding and a streamlined settings library.

In addition to the aforementioned all-new features, Compressor supports video and audio formats ranging from basic to professional. With support for a broad range of devices and still images, Compressor effortlessly handles nearly any media format.

Utilizing Apple’s optical flow technology, the software delivers impeccable format conversions regardless of file type. Capable of converting file type, FPS and more, the software also features video retiming and dynamic image filters. Compressor 4 now features the previously separate Apple Qmaster features built-in. This allows users to make use of available cores in their Mac, or use other Macs on the network to speed up encoding times.

Motion and Compressor work seamlessly with Final Cut Pro X, and stand to revolutionize the way post production is approached. With significant redesigns and impressive new features, both titles make a valuable addition to any video professional’s software library.

  • New Mac mini: Operation "Sandy Bridge"

    Apple announced brand new Mac minis today, with notable changes.

    Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors have been added to Apple’s new line of Mac minis in the form of Intel Core i5s. Now, what is “Sandy Bridge,” you ask? Specifically, that’s the name of the processor that is the successor to the Nehalem processor. Sandy Bridge processors are touted to be “up to 2x faster” per Apple’s claims.

    The new Mac minis sport faster graphics (with a discrete AMD Radeon HD graphics processor) and also include support for Thunderbolt connectivity. The Thunderbolt port gives access for the new Apple Thunderbolt Display and also supports Mini DisplayPort peripherals. Mac mini features an HDMI and built-in SDXC card slot.

    What’s more (or should I say “what’s less) is that these new models have eliminated optical drives, taking a cue from the MacBook Air line. A separate SuperDrive is available for purchase.

    My favorite part so far? NO MORE POWER BRICK. Mac mini now has a built-in power brick, so all you see is a single cord.

    Standard configurations:

    * 2.3GHz Intel Core i5, 500 GB hard drive, 2GB RAM: *$599.99*
    * 2.5GHz Intel Core i5, 500 GB hard drive, 4GB RAM: *$799.99*

    Server configuration:

    * 2.0GHz, dual 500GB hard drives, 4GB RAM: *$999.99*

    All models come with Lion (OS 10.7) pre-installed.

    We will be listing these and CTO options shortly. More updates as we get them!

You’ll always know which photos you shared (or didn’t share) on Facebook, because iPhoto keeps track of that for you.

    Emailing Photos – iPhoto now includes eight Apple-designed themes that you customize with your own images and words. Rearrange photos with a simple drag and drop, adjust the image mask, or change the size and style of your text. Plus, iPhoto optimizes your message so it’s never too big to send. iPhoto also works with popular email services like MobileMe, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live Hotmail, and AOL. And since iPhoto keeps track of all your email messages with photos, you’re free to open a sent message, make changes, and share it with someone new, anytime you want.

    New Slideshows – New animated themes — like Holiday Mobile, Places, and Reflections — give your photos movement and help you avoid typical, photo-by-photo, fade-in, fade-out slideshows. Each shot is centered and framed perfectly, thanks to face detection. And the animated themes include their own soundtracks, so your photos and music play together flawlessly.

    Big Leap in Books iPhoto ’11 makes it even easier to create professional-quality books using your own photos. Building your book starts with a new dynamic Theme browser. Pick a theme, and an even smarter Autoflow instantly goes to work, placing your images for you. Higher-rated images are featured more prominently. Photos taken on the same day appear together. And all the while, face detection ensures that photos of people are cropped and framed properly. Change the background color, font, layout, and more. Add eye-popping full-bleed, two-page spreads.

    Letterpress Cards – For the first time, traditional printing techniques join modern digital photography on a large scale. With iPhoto ’11, you can create custom letterpress cards personalized with your photos and text. Each iPhoto letterpress card is made from premium paper and produced using a centuries-old printing method. Then it’s digitally processed with your photos and text. iPhoto letterpress cards are available in 15 beautifully crafted themes complete with matching envelope. There’s just something about the elegant look and feel of a letterpress card.

    As John Gruber from Daring Fireball tweeted: “Can you imagine any other computer company offering letterpress as a mass-market printing technology?”
