The snow is finally falling again here in the Mad River Valley, much to the delight of our local ski areas and die-hard snowmobilers. We haven’t had much snow this season, so hopefully this will be a shot in the arm for our area businesses that rely on good snowfalls to be profitable.

Driving through the Valley this time of year you’ll see livestock and wild turkeys on snow covered cornfields, scrounging for leftovers from the summer. Another familiar sight is folks enjoying a true Vermont favorite: sugar on snow. You fill a paper cup, mug or bowl with snow and drizzle hot maple syrup over the top. Often times, a sour pickle accompanies this special treat to help enhance the maple flavor. My first winter in Vermont, I was quickly acquainted with sugar on snow. I couldn’t believe it when I was handed a cup of snow with a pickle in it, but once I tried it, it made perfect sense!

Don is out of town this week, traveling to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA, Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show and then to New York for the National Retail Federation’s BIG Show. Small Dog was one of only five top Apple Specialists from across the country asked to present to top executives at Apple. A key portion of our presentation focused on our multiple bottom line: people, planet and profit. The effect we have on our environment, community, customers and employees is just as important as maintaining our profitability. This multiple bottom line has been at the core of our success year over year, and we strive daily to build on our success—especially, providing the best customer experience possible.

At Small Dog, a huge component of a positive customer experience is having knowledgeable staff that knows our products and can offer solutions based on a customer’s individual needs. With that in mind, did you know that every single employee at Small Dog is required to attain Apple Product Professional certification? This certification, attainable only through Apple, requires hours and hours of training and a thorough knowledge of every Apple product. This ensures that when you call or come into any of our stores, any Small Dog employee can provide the help or guidance you may need with your purchase. In addition, many of us have achieved the next level of certification, Apple Sales Professional. 85% of our employees are ASPs, giving further credence to the importance we place on product knowledge throughout the company.

It’s no secret that we here at Small Dog believe that AppleCare is a great value. We all hope never to use it, but we live in an imperfect world with yes–gasp–imperfect parts. Hard drives sometimes fail, power adapters fray and screens flicker…and for those things (and more), there’s AppleCare.

No, we’re not being paid by Apple to say that. However, we genuinely recognize it as a benefit for your machine and for you, especially since along with the parts and labor coverage, you get phone support through Apple.

Right now, AppleCare is on sale when you purchase it with a Mac or with an iPod. Save $20 on any Mac with AppleCare and get free shipping with any iPod plus AppleCare purchase (use code *ifree12* in the cart).

  • Apple Announces Education Event Thursday, 1/19

Finally, some real news out of Cupertino: Apple announced that it will hold an event with an education theme next week. Slated to begin at 10AM ET/7AM PT on Thursday, January 19, the event already seems to be uniquely different than the ones we’ve seen and followed in years past.

We haven’t yet begun to speculate what might be announced, but the rumors have started swirling.

    From “*Macworld:*”:http://www.macworld.com/article/164758/2012/01/apple_announces_jan_19_education_event_in_nyc.html#lsrc=twt_macworld
__”Given the New York City location, it also seems reasonable that publishing is in some way involved–perhaps an initiative for bringing textbooks to iOS devices? Will we finally see a version of iBooks for the Mac?”__

    From “*TechCrunch:*”:http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/11/apple-announces-education-event-on-january-19-in-nyc/
__”Publishing? iBooks? Education? Is it just me, or does it seem like Apple is preparing to make some sort of educational push with digital textbooks?”__

The invitation to the event is pictured to the right–an outline of Apple’s logo sketched within the NYC skyline. The event will be taking place at the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue, a first for Apple as far as I know.

Of course, since no one knows for sure what the event’s topics will be, we don’t know yet what that means for Small Dog. We’re excited to see what happens and will be following the keynote next Thursday and reporting back to you guys.

Have any ideas what may be in the works? Comment below. Watch this space for updates next week!

  • It’s been pretty quiet in the office this week without Don and his daily themed music, especially reggae Thursday. However, the silver lining has been a one year old chocolate lab named Tyro. She has tagged along with Stephanie this week, so Tyro and my dog Buddy have been racing up and down the hallway. Now that’s entertainment!

  • Friday the 13th: Fear Quotes

It’s Friday the 13th, and we’re thinking about phobias (what if my computer crashes and I haven’t saved recently?!), bad luck (“*we’ve seen all kinds*”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/smalldog/sets/72157600984601877/) and superstitions (is it weird to open apps in the same order every day?).

We all remember the famous line spoken by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his “*inaugural speech,*”:http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5057/ “The Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself,” but there has been much said on the topic, so here are a few more:

    *ALBERT CAMUS:*
__Nothing is more despicable than respect based on fear.__

    *ANNE FRANK:*
__The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature.__

    *BOB DYLAN:*
__I accept chaos. I am not sure whether it accepts me. I know some people are terrified of the bomb. But then some people are terrified to be seen carrying a Modern Screen magazine. Experience teaches us that silence terrifies people the most.__

    *DOROTHY THOMPSON:*
__Fear grows in darkness; if you think there’s a bogeyman around, turn on the light.__

    *ELEANOR ROOSEVELT:*
__You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.__

    *H. JACKSON BROWNE:*
__Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is.__

    *MARIE CURIE:*
__Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.__

    *RALPH WALDO EMERSON:*
__Don’t waste life in doubts and fears; spend yourself on the work before you, well assured that the right performance of this hour’s duties will be the best preparation for the hours and ages that will follow it.__

    *ROSA PARKS:*
__I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.__

    *SHEL SILVERSTEIN:*
__The hens they all cackle, the roosters all beg,__
__But I will not hatch, I will not hatch.__
__For I hear all the talk of pollution and war__
__As the people all shout and the airplanes roar,__
__So I’m staying in here where it’s safe and it’s warm,__
    __And I WILL NOT HATCH!__

    *THOMAS JEFFERSON:*
__Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.__

    *WILLIAM ALLEN WHITE:*
__I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today.__

  • Avid PowerPoint User? Give Keynote a Try!

I have been using Macs now for seven years. For the most part, I have always used Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for Mac. Why? For one, PowerPoint was the first slideshow application that was introduced to me–as it probably was for most people. I had experimented with iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) a little while when I bought my very first Mac, but not in much depth.

Coming into Small Dog over a month ago, one of my first big projects was to create a Keynote presentation for the annual Apple Business Review in Cupertino, California.

It’s pretty obvious that both allow you to create slides that can contain: text, tables, charts, graphs, photos, movies, etc. And with each, you can get as fancy as you’d like with visual themes and animation.

At first glance, Keynote seems like a pretty minimalistic application and one might assume that it’s a very basic presentation tool. But it’s not–it’s quite powerful. One great feature is the ability to integrate iLife into Keynote, pulling photos, music and video from iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie. Apple makes it super easy to simply drag-and-drop objects from other applications. And honestly, who can’t handle a little dragging-and-dropping?

For me, Keynote takes it home with the great Inspector tool. It’s the control panel for your presentation. It’s a much easier way to navigate through different options compared to the busy-ness of the toolbar in PowerPoint. It’s also very similar to the way design programs from Adobe operate, and since Creative Suite is what I’m used to using, it was second nature for me in Keynote.

Long story short, for those of you who are strict PowerPoint users, I’d suggest giving Keynote a try. I think you’ll love how simple it is to create a visually appealing, powerful slideshow. Another great, user-friendly Apple application!
