Employee Profile – Meet Scott Markoski!

One of the biggest changes at Small Dog since I left in 2006 is how large the company has become. It takes a LOT of people to fill all of the open retail hours. It has been a struggle for me just to get to know the folks in Waitsfield, let alone Manchester and South Burlington. I decided if I’m having trouble getting to know the staff, our faithful customers and readers must be simply overwhelmed so off and on, I’ll introduce you all to the people who make up Small Dog Electronics.

I decided to start with our younger Small Dog employees. There was a time when Hapy and Art were the young guns but now that they are both over 40 and hobbling onto the softball field, they no longer qualify. We now have quite a few employees who are in their very first job, fresh out of college. What I love most about having these “new workers” is that we have the opportunity to mold them as employees. Whether they stay with us for years or move on to other things, we can share our philosophy with them and perhaps influence how they will mature as adults.

Scott Markoski is our web developer and works closely with Morgan and Rebecca in IT. It wasn’t that long ago that Morgan was our young developer! Scott has probably the best sense of humor in the company which he expresses in his iChat statuses, which always makes me smile. It also shows in what his favorite web site is right now 5secondfilms.com. Scott notes: “They started a few years ago, making hilarious 5 second video clips, usually focusing on some goofy concept. Scott’s interest in computers started in high school in Western Mass when he started programming calculators. This is probably why he gets along with Morgan so well! Scott plays a musical instrument, the piano, which he’s been playing for 12 years. While teaching technology, I noticed that kids who play a musical instrument in their younger years seem to gravitate towards computers so this is always a question that I ask when I’m getting to know someone.

I asked Scott if he had a dream car and he answered with “Yes, the 1965 Aston Martin DB5”. You may recognize this as the car that was used in the early Bond films. Well, I guess Scott will be working with us for some time to come as this car fetched over $500K at auction. (OK, that was George Harrison’s but still!)

The furthest away that Scott has travelled is Prince Edward Island, which is 673 miles away from Small Dog. I have never been to PEI but it is one destination that I would love to see. I remember looking at a map of the Bay of Fundy and finding out that the largest whirlpool on Earth was there; I have been wanting to go there ever since!

The image that I attached is how just about everyone will see Scott when visiting the IT office. I seldom see his face, but I would instantly recognize him from behind!

So Scott, thank you for coming to work each day with your happy outlook on life AND for wearing a bow tie every once in a while. You are making a lot of us smile.

  • MAC TREAT #183: Swiped

    There are a lot of things I love about the Magic Mouse and Multi-Touch gestures in general, such as their ability to make a seemingly simple item–a mouse or a trackpad–much more sophisticated. As we know from many years of Apple history, simple doesn’t have to mean lacking, and often conceals some very complex thought and engineering in order to create ease for the user.

    All of that said, there are sometimes features that Apple devices are capable of that I wish they just…weren’t. (“*Remember ‘natural’ scrolling?*”:http://blog.smalldog.com/kibbles/kb734/ I still can’t get on board with that one on my desktop.)

    With every new OS release, there are hundreds of new things that it can do, and there’s one in particular that I find more annoying than not–swiping in Safari. I find that I inadvertently make the swiping gesture and end up on a different web page than I want. If this has happened to you, try this:

    * Go to *System Preferences > Mouse* and click on “More Gestures”
    * Uncheck “Swipe between pages” or select an option from the drop down that’s a better fit

    (For the record, I changed it to “Swipe left or right with two fingers” because that dramatically limits the chances that I’d do it accidentally.)

  • APP REVIEW: Gilt Taste

    If you are like me, the internet has become your go-to source for new recipes. While I have an entire shelf full of cookbooks (ok, they are all my wife’s) more often than not my MacBook Pro is sitting on the counter while I am chopping and mixing up a storm. This means that I need to keep at least one finger clean to scroll down the page, which is not always possible, so my down arrow button gets a little food on it now and again. I haven’t dared take the iPad into the kitchen as the touchscreen interface means even more touching of my device. If only there were a way to turn the pages without having to touch the screen….

    Wait, there is!

    “Gilt Taste”:http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gilt-taste/id534643802?ls=1&mt=8 is a free app from the Gilt Groupe which gives you access to their store, articles, and recipes. The editorial advisor is Ruth Reichl, former __New York Times__ restaurant critic and editor-in-chief of __Gourmet__, and current judge on __Top Chef: Masters__, which means that there is a great selection of recipes to choose from. The best feature, though, is that in the recipes section you can turn the page by merely swiping your hand in the air in front of the iPad. This is facilitated by the camera sensing your hand movement, so it will only work on the iPad 2 or 3.

    This feature is a real game changer in the kitchen, so I hope that it gets integrated into more apps or even becomes a native feature.

  • I am getting ready for Independence Day and this year it is a bit more than usual. Grace and I will have our annual 4th of July party after the big Warren, VT parade but this year Grace is out visiting her Mom until the 3rd so I will be getting all the party preparations going. Also, I set the parade as the goal for the debut of my electric motorcycle and I am happy to report that as of today, it is looking pretty good that the bike will be ready for the parade. I just got off the phone with my friend, Steve Miracle, who is an electric vehicle expert and I am heading over there this afternoon to fire it up for the first time. Powered by a 20kW hub motor and holding a lot of batteries, it is our goal to achieve at least a 75 mile range and top speed of 100MPH. I’ll post some pictures from the parade next week.
