  • Grace is off to visit her 98-year old mother in Louisville for her birthday so the dogs and I will have the run of the place. I’ll try to sneak in a ride between the raindrops but I have some messy projects on my AH Sprite in mind, like changing shocks and figuring out how to stop some oil leaks.

We also are preparing for my traditional 4th of July party and the Warren parade. Happy Birthday USA!

  • MAC TREAT #210: Including Extensions in Contacts

Many of us have work numbers with extensions and you may notice that there isn’t an option to include a contact’s direct extension in your Contacts app. Well, here is a little trick that will allow you to include a contact’s extension and call them directly.

To add an extension to any of your contacts, navigate to that person’s address card and select the number you wish to add or edit. While entering the number take note of the “+*#” key in the bottom left. Tapping this will reveal a list of symbols that have functions within the iOS software. After you have typed the main number navigate to the symbols menu and tap the “pause” button, which will appear as a comma. After that enter the pound symbol with the extension following it. Once you have done that the number should look something like this: *1-(234)-555-1234,#999.*

Now when you select that contact’s work number to call, the phone will dial the main number and then wait two-seconds before dialing the extension. Voilà! You now have a one-click solution for dialing your work contacts’ numbers that have extensions.

  • SOAP BOX | Civil Rights Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

    *Start Soapbox*

There were three important decisions that were handed down this week from the Supreme Court. Two giant steps forward were made when the Supreme Court declared DOMA or Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and also declined to take up the appeal of a California court’s decision to strike down Proposition 8, which outlawed same sex marriage, in California. These two decisions are vital steps toward providing equal protection under our constitution and we applaud the court for recognizing that love is blind to sexual orientation.

Unfortunately, the court took a big step backwards in declaring important sections of the Voting Rights Act to be unconstitutional. This act, which was overwhelmingly renewed in 2006, had ensured that voting rights were preserved in areas where there had been widespread voter suppression in the past. The law had been a success in bringing many new voters into the process as well as in electing minority representatives in state legislatures and the US Congress. The court asked Congress to “fix” the law but it seems that this current “do-nothing” Congress is unlikely to act.

Voting is a sacred right and obligation of a citizen and in times where we see efforts in states to restrict voting or we see long lines of people waiting to exercise their rights, it does seem that it is high time to make sure that every citizen is given equal access to the ballot box.

I applaud the court in recognizing that our gay and lesbian friends and neighbors are citizens deserving of equal rights, not only in marriage but in employment and every other area where we apply the famous phrase from our Declaration of Independence: “…all men are created equal.” “Attaboy’s” and “Attagirl’s” to SCOTUS for these rulings on equal rights and, unfortunately, shame on them for gutting the Voting Rights Act.

  • _Dear Friends,_

We are practicing ark building here in Vermont as we seem to be stuck in a weather pattern of muggy weather and lots of rain. After the rainiest May on record we seem to be right on track for this June to be another wettest month of all time. A little bit of sun and I’ll bet the garden will take a big step forward. I have been playing around with the developer release of iOS 7 and I really like the improvements to the Weather app. Not only is the weather animation kind of cute but I really like the hour by hour forecast which includes the percentage chance of precipitation, which unfortunately has been way way too high these days.
