The following is a blog from Sophie, who is living abroad in Chile for the next year, and is Small Dog’s current foreign correspondent! She will be checking in with us periodically to let us know how she and her MacBook are doing…
Hola Everyone! My name is Sophie and this year I am on an adventure in Chile! I am spending the year abroad living with a host family and going to school. I have been here in Chile ten days now and so much has happened already! In the airport there was a woman with not only a trusty MacBook for her travels but also a jittery kitten to accompany her. I asked how it was traveling with both Book and cat and her reply was that while it was great to have both items, going through security was not her biggest perk.
A big difference that I have been facing in Chile has been the
way I greet everyone. Rather than a hug or handshake all Chileans greet each other by touching cheek to cheek and making a kissing sound while not actually kissing the person. I was quite shocked at first- but have had to adjust because I cannot go anywhere without receiving and giving at least a dozen every hour!
Last night there was a party and all of my classmates came. I brought out my MacBook to show them pictures, but they were really impressed with the PhotoBooth! We spent about half an hour snapping shoots of the twelve of us all huddled around a tiny white laptop. They all kept saying “que lindo” which means “how beautiful!” and pointing at the Mac. They all wanted to touch it and rub their fingers on the shiny apple! My friend explained that many people around here do not have computers like this so they all wanted to see it! I was very happy to share the joy of my MacBook!
I have included a two pictures that were taken with PhotoBooth and I would like to thank Small Dog for donating this MacBook for my travels!
