Skullcandy Pipe in Action

I was able to snag one of the new Skullcandy Pipes for my trip to Jamaica. We like to listen to our extensive reggae collection on the beach and in the room at night. It is remarkably more noisy here at night than in Vermont so going to sleep to reggae using the iPod’s sleep timer is a great solution to block on the road noise and partying going on here in Negril.

The Skullcandy Pipe (I grabbed a Chrome model to be like Katie), is an extremely compact but powerful portable speaker. It has the necessary fittings for any iPod (and I brought 4 iPods!) and it is simple to operate. With the two opposing speakers on either end of the eight inch tube, it produces sound free of distortion and achieves volume levels that are perfect on the beach or in the room. The Pipe is great to position between two beach chairs!

It is powered by 4 AAA batteries and our experience is that they will just about last a whole day of playing the Pipe but because they’re AAAs, they just don’t pack enough juice for the entire day. There is a small latch to open the flush mounted battery compartment and if you are not careful the batteries might pop out before you get the battery door replaced, that took a couple of tries to get it right.

The included AC adapter with the Skullcandy logo reminds me of an iPod charger, except in black. There are only two controls: on/off and volume.

I highly recommend this compact yet powerful portable speaker!
