Summers in Vermont always seem too short, just as the days start to get longer and summer BBQ’s become a weekly event, August comes. It seems that August is the month everyone tries to fit in all the summer activities they said they were going to do and realize Labor Day is just around the corner. This year, it appears that Summer in Vermont is shorter than it has ever been. We have seen more rain than sunshine, and it’s taking a toll.
Fields, crops and roadways are all slowly washing away. Many secondary roads are being hit the hardest with all the Mountain runoff. The streams and brooks that border many Vermont roadways are tipping their banks and taking out entire roads. Flood warnings are frequent and many of my fellow co-workers are having to take alternate routes home as roadways become temporary rivers.
The stream by my house recently overflowed and took out the road just past my house. Mountain runoff caused the washout, as there are no rivers nor brooks near the house, so it’s pretty amazing how much damage can be done from too much rain. It’s going to be a few weeks to get things cleaned up; the damage is minor to what other parts of the country has seen in the past few months, but substantial for our area.
