New Apple Cinema Display – After 4+ Years!

Apple announced a brand-new display today as well. It’s been a long time coming (the Apple Cinema Displays have not been refreshed since early 2004), but the new display is in-line with the rest of the Mac aesthetic and features.

Specs

  • 24-inch LED-backlit Cinema Display
  • Glass screen stretches edge to edge like the iMac models
  • Display includes a MagSafe connector, 3 USB ports and Mini DisplayPort**
  • 1920 × 1200 pixel resolution
  • Built-in iSight (finally!!!) and microphone
  • Built-in stereo speakers
  • Has an EPEAT Gold rating, toxin-free (no mercury) and highly recyclable; the glass is arsenic-free and the internal cables are BFR– and PVC-free
  • $899 pricepoint; ships in November.

Most features are straightforward, but the new Mini DisplayPort may require some explanation. As Ed mentioned below, it is a new industry standard that easily offers a digital connection to external displays (including 30-inch displays).

UPDATE: As of right now, the display is only compatible with the new notebooks that have the Mini DisplayPort.

We hope that adapters (I’d love a DVI-to-Mini DisplayPort for my MacBook Pro!) will be available in the near future, but this has not been verified by Apple.

The displays are not available yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
