The Importance of Surge Protection

We saw more severe thunderstorms over the weekend, and each storm brings a surge of power-related repairs into the shop. Instead of the oh-so-2001 modem replacements, we’re seeing more and more failed AirPort Base Stations and Time Capsules.

My own AirPort was fried, in addition to my television, cordless phone, DSL modem, and much of the home theatre, despite everything being on good quality surge protectors. (I’m not saying you shouldn’t have surge protection, because I have neighbors who’ve had damage in the past where I haven’t.)

This type of damage is not covered by AppleCare, or any manufacturer’s warranty for that matter. Do yourself a favor and get everything on a good quality surge protector and make sure your insurance covers this type of event. I am a fan of Fellowes 8 Outlets Surge Suppressor, though you can view everything we offer here. (click on either “Surge Suppression” or “Batteries & UPS Backups” to view what you need!)

I’m still waiting to hear back about my claim, but I’m sure everything will be resolved one way or another.

  • *Greetings!*

We hope that you and your family and friends are enjoying the dog days of summer. The term “Dog Days” is often used to describe the hot and humid days that occur between July and early September, and from what “Wikipedia told me,”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_days_of_summer this expression has existed since the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

“Dog Days” have a special significance to the many of us at Small Dog Electronics who are dog owners and who take advantage of these warm days to spend quality time outside with our best friends. It is peak frisbee playing and river swimming season across the Green Mountain State–just ask my Australian Cattle Dog Waylon.

Likewise, this also signifies the end of summer and the back to school season. We refer to this time as “Mac To School,” as August is one of our busiest months of Mac sales. In some exciting news, on Saturday August 22, the State of Vermont will be participating in a Tax Free Holiday where items valued at less than $2,000 will be tax exempt! This year, the Tax Free Holiday coincides with the heart of the Mac to School season and we feel that this will be a perfect opportunity to optimize your purchasing dollars.

We’ve been busy preparing some great deals for you to get yourself or someone you know ready to head to school in September. We will also be open extended hours on Saturday the 22nd and have a full staff to available to assist you in any way.

Our Mac to School specials are available to anyone–whether you’re a student or not–so read more below and stop in to check them out!

  • iHome iH9 iPod Alarm Clock Review

I wanted to get an iPod Docking Station for our kitchen and I have been really pleased with the iHome iH8 that we have in the bedroom, so I decided to give the new iHome iH9 a shot.

There are a couple of upgrades on the iH9 that are worth mentioning. First, it comes with a remote that can be used to control both the iH9 as well as the iPod that is docked. There is also a way to program the snooze button for different lengths of time if the standard nine minutes is not enough.

By far though, I think the coolest feature that iHome has added to the new unit is what they call 7-5-2. This allows you to set up the alarm to go off either at the same time every day, just on weekdays or just the weekends. Also, the iH9 has a battery back up, so if you lose power there is no need to worry about re-setting the clock and alarm.

After checking out all of the new features, I think I will end up putting the iH9 in the bedroom and moving the iH8 down to the kitchen. We’re currently running a special on the **iH9 for $79.99, which is $10.00 off the regular list price.**

Stop by either the Waitsfield or South Burlington showroom to hear how great the iH9 sounds!
