Warner Bros. Launches App Editions of Popular Films

This morning, Warner Brothers debuted a series of new apps containing “App Editions” of some of its films. Christopher Nolan directed, Inception and The Dark Knight are the first two titles released. App Editions offer viewers the opportunity to either stream or download films via in-app purchase. In addition to providing access to the main feature, each app offers a wealth of Blu-ray-like bonus materials. Similar to the extra features typically included with physical media, this content ranges from games and trivia to soundtracks and trailers. Users can unlock this bonus content after purchasing the corresponding feature film through the app. Each app, while free to download, banks heavily on the purchase of additional in-app content to provide the full experience. Bundled into each app for free are the first five minutes of each film, and a small sampling of bonus content.

While the need for an entire app positioned around a single movie may seem puzzling, Warner Brothers states this means of delivery brings content otherwise unavailable to users in countries without iTunes Movies. Additionally, App Editions are universal across all iOS devices, include several subtitle tracks, and integrate with social media. Though the selection is currently limited, the studio plans to release additional titles in the future. Pricing falls in line, for the most part, with versions of the movies available through iTunes. The Dark Knight is available for $9.99, and Inception for $11.99. It is worth noting, however, that App Editions do not allow users to rent movies, only purchase them.
