Why I waited for the iPad 2.

The iPad 2 was released recently and I had decided long ago to wait for it.

I have received the question a few times from coworkers, family members and friends and I constantly came up with the same reasoning. I was intrigued by the prospect of what Apple was going to do next.

The iPad was a truly magical and revolutionary product. But tablets weren’t a new idea, they are actually an old one. Bill Gates (we don’t often say his name here on Barkings) has actually said that tablets were the future of computing, in 2001 no less. But tablets never really took off like they were supposed to, too slow, too clunky and way to big. The iPad was the opposite of what everyone thought a tablet was and became what a tablet had to be if it wanted to compete.

Trust me, I wanted one in the worst way. I begged and pleaded, made deals with all kinds of religious entities and sold children I didn’t even have yet for the chance to convince my wife to let me buy one. Once that was over, I had a moment of clarity. If the first iPad was this awesome, what could be next?

I waited more to see what Apple was going to do next and I was not let down. What do you call something that changed the way we view an entire product line and made it thinner, faster and lighter? Design innovation and an excellent product. I find myself using the iPad for many of my daily tasks here at the store, like writing this blog post. The best part of the iPad is the experience that surrounds it and the interface. This one is more fluid and feels more responsive to me than the previous generation.

That is why I waited, to see what Apple was going to done to do next because they set the bar so high the first time. By all accounts, the cleared it.
