500,000 Apps and Counting

Today app sites 148Apps and Chomp partnered with publisher Chillingo to release an infographic marking the unofficial milestone of 500,000 approved apps in the iTunes App Store. While Apple has yet to make an official announcement regarding the achievement, the group’s graphic—featured originally on its Facebook page—provides an intriguing visual glimpse into the statistics behind Apple’s successful virtual storefront.

Certainly one of Apple’s greatest innovations and successes—both in terms of software and in general—the App Store boasts several staggering statistics for a service not even a full three years old. Among the chart’s most interesting statistic, the group pegs the value of ‘All Apps Currently Live’ at $891,982.24—an impressive figure, especially when considering 37% of all apps are reportedly free. The most popular paid apps of all time are also featured with, you guessed it, Chillingo’s honor student: Angry Birds topping the list. Viewers will surely be pleased to see iFart Mobile has also made the list securing the number 12 spot—give yourself a pat on the back people.

Without spoiling the infographic, here are a few other notable stats:

  • Games are the most popular app category, comprising 15% of all downloads
  • $3.64 is the average price for paid apps
  • In 2010 ‘App’ was named “Word of the Year” by the American Dialect Society
  • The average paid app fluctuates about $2.50 in price over time
