Airplanes, iPhones and Altitude

Our good friends over at Tidbits recently posted an article written by pilot and physics guru, Steve McCabe about turning personal electronics off below 10,000 feet.

The gist of the article is that the current regulations are outdated and need to be brought up to date and that the FAA is looking for feedback on the regulation pertaining to personal electronics devices (PEDs). Did you know that Part 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) bans all personal electronics, with these specific exceptions: portable voice recorders, hearing aids, heart pacemakers and electric shavers. I’m completely psyched that I can use my portable voice recorder. (wth?!?)

The FAA is soliciting passenger feedback regarding PEDs. To put your two cents in, email PEDcomment@faa.gov or visit the Federal eRulemaking Portal (www.regulations.gov) and “follow the online instructions for sending your comments electronically.”
