Getting File Information

This little trick is something I just discovered this morning. If you select a file that you’ve downloaded from the web and hit Apple+I you get a little window that shows information about the file. I use the Apple+I command mostly on the Macintosh HD icon to show how much space I’ve used and how much space is free on my hard drive. It also displays things like permissions, what application should be used to open the file, and the files location on your hard drive among other things.

Today’s tip focuses on the More Info section of this window. I used this section of information for things like video and image files when I wanted to know their resolutions and play times (movie files). Today when I was looking at a file that I had downloaded from the internet I noticed that in the More Info section it displayed the link (URL) from where I had downloaded the file.

How is this useful? Well for me I sometimes download a file from a random website and I’ll forget to bookmark it so when I want to go back to that website I either have to search through my history or search on Google. Now I can simply use the Get Info on the specific file and it’ll show me the URL from which it came from.
