Verizon iPhone 4: What's the Difference?

In the days following the announcement of the Verizon iPhone 4, some have wondered exactly how it differs from its AT&T based sibling. For all intents and purposes, the Verizon handset contains the same hardware and technology used in the AT&T version, but with retooled CDMA compatible guts. Even though the hardware itself did not receive an ‘S’ speed boost, it does contain a few subtle differences.

The most noticeable physical difference, especially in terms of accessories, is slightly shifted button placement on the device’s left side. Though all three buttons retain their same size, they have been moved enough that many cases designed for the original AT&T model will not fit. Reasons for this subtle change are unknown, but it is likely the modified internal components have something to do with it. Those who have had hands-on time with the device have also noted an extra break in the phone’s bezel. While some have claimed this marks a redesigned antenna, exact reasons for the added break are unknown. It is highly probable that this modification was merely to better accommodate the CDMA technology.

A third physical difference between models is that the Verizon version lacks the SIM Card slot found on the right side of the AT&T model. This omission is easily explained by the type of wireless technology implemented on Verizon’s network versus AT&T’s. Unlike AT&T, which relies on GSM technology for its network, Verizon uses CDMA. This technology does not use individual SIM Cards, hence the missing SIM slot on the Verizon model.

The fourth and final difference between the two models comes in the form of included software. As announced during the Verizon presentation, the CDMA compliant iPhone 4 supports a Personal Wi-Fi Hotspot for up to 5 users. While pricing and data details have yet to be announced in relation to this service, it’s still a great option which would allow up to 5 Macs, Wi-Fi iPads, etc. to share the phone’s 3G connection. On the display models of the phone circulating post conference, attendees discovered the Personal Hotspot option is located immediately within the phone’s Settings app, on what appears to be either a new or custom version of iOS 4.

As announced Tuesday, the Verizon iPhone 4 will become available for pre-order to existing Verizon customers on Thursday February 3. The phone will become publicly available at Apple and Verizon Wireless stores a week later on the 10th. You can learn more about the device here.
