To me, the iPod nano has always been the “go to” iPod. When Apple released the small, square version of the nano last fall, it seemed that many people started to shy away as it no longer had the video capabilities of the previous generation. Some might argue that it was due to the sexiness of the 4th gen. iPod touch, but I think people did not realize that such a little iPod with a touch screen could do so much. Unless you had eagle eye vision or were a professional squinter, the video capability on the 5th generation model seemed like just an “extra” thing that didn’t get much use.
The new iPod nano has quickly turned into my favorite iPod, even over the iPod shuffle, which if you know me, I have been obsessed with forever. Sticking to the 8GB ($149.99) and 16GB ($179.99) sizes, the nano is the perfect gift for anyone and everyone, including you! Just like the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, the touch sensitivity is amazing. Just tap on the icon you want and you’re good to go! You can store your music and playlists, sort by songs and artist and even create Genius Mixes.
Like its predecessor, the 6th generation iPod nano has a radio feature. Your headphones act as the antenna and allow a signal to reach your iPod. When listening to the radio there is a feature called “Live Pause” which allows you to pause music or spoken word. You can even rewind up to 15 minutes to catch something you missed.
The iPod nano also doubles as a pedometer—you can create daily goals and even sync them to your computer—and it will work with the Nike+ accessory. Just like the iPod shuffle, the iPod nano has a built in clip so you can attach it easily to clothing or workout gear. You can change the screen position with a two-finger gesture so the menu is always facing the correct direction.
One of my favorite things that Apple adds to its products are accessibility options. The iPod nano, includes VoiceOver technology which can fill you in on the name of the currently playing song, and even help you navigate the device’s menus. You can also change the background of the nano to white on black for a higher contrast—this works with any application. Lastly, you can enable Mono Audio to direct the audio so that you can hear both channels in either ear.
Overall, I have become the head cheerleader for the iPod nano 6th generation. I love my nano and use it every day. I am very happy with all of its capabilities, screen size, battery life and overall performance. The iPod nano is perfect as a present for a friend, a thank you gift or even as a “just because” gift for yourself!
