What’s the Matter?

As you know I am always playing with home automation, whether it is my Philips Hue lighting, my Robo vacuums, garage door openers, smart locks or just about anything. One issue has always been making everything work well with each other. There were many standards, HomeKit, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread as well as Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

The Evolution of Smart Home Technology | by Tod Caflisch | Medium

In late 2019 Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung and others initiated a common standard under the banner of Project Connected Home over IP (CHIP), which later transformed into Matter. The core idea behind Matter is to enable seamless communication between devices, regardless of the brand, through a single protocol.

Matter has opened up a whole new set of manufacturer’s products to HomeKit with Matter compatibility. Smart lock manufacturers like Level and Yale adopted Matter as did a number of lighting groups like GE/Savant, Nanoleaf and more. No more are you stuck with just a single brand that loosely supported HomeKit. Now most home automation products are adopting Matter.

But be careful, I have found that some earlier products are listed as Matter-compatible but are not. Look for the Matter Logo on the packaging and make sure it has the Matter/Homekit QR code so you can add it.

How Does Matter Work?

Matter operates on several principles:

Interoperability: Matter supports devices using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread (a low-power mesh networking protocol). This means that devices can communicate directly with each other over your local network without the need for cloud services or in most cases separate hubs, which traditionally could cause delays or outages.

Local Control: One of the standout features of Matter is its emphasis on local control. This ensures that your smart home devices can continue to function even if your internet connection goes down, providing reliability and privacy.

Simplified Setup: Matter devices are set up using a process called commissioning, which can be done via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for initial setup, after which the devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread. This makes adding new devices to your smart home network straightforward.

Security: Matter includes robust security features, with each device authenticated and all communications encrypted. This addresses many security concerns associated with IoT devices.

-Multi-Admin Control: Matter allows multiple smart home platforms (like Apple Homekit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings) to control the same device simultaneously, enhancing user flexibility.

Benefits of Matter in Home Automation

Unified Control: With Matter, you’re no longer confined to using multiple apps for different devices. One app can control all your Matter-certified devices, simplifying your smart home ecosystem.

Increased Compatibility: The standard supports a growing list of device types, from lights and switches to thermostats and security systems, ensuring you’re not limited by brand-specific ecosystems.

Energy Efficiency: Devices like smart plugs can offer real-time energy usage reports, helping you manage and reduce energy consumption more effectively.

Future-Proofing: With major players backing Matter, the standard is set to evolve, potentially incorporating more device types and features, ensuring your smart home investments remain relevant.

Looking Forward

Matter represents a significant step forward in the smart home industry, promising a future where your home automation system is not just about convenience but also about safety, efficiency, and seamless integration. As more devices become certified and as the standard matures, Matter could truly unify the fragmented smart home market, making smart living accessible and straightforward for everyone.

As Matter continues to evolve, keep an eye on new product releases, software updates from your smart home platforms, and community feedback to fully leverage this exciting advancement in home automation technology.
