  • MAC TREAT #185: Show Your Scroll Bars

    By default, OS 10.7 detects and uses your device to decide whether or not to show scroll bars in on-screen windows. I prefer to have them always appear, so if you’d like to constantly see them in any window that’s scrollable, here’s how you do it:

    * Go to System Preferences
    * Open General
    * Select “Always” under “Show scroll bars”

    No more scroll bar hide and seek…

  • _Dear Friends,_

    We had our company picnic down at Plymouth State Park and it was a beautiful Sunday at Lake Echo. In between burgers and dogs, I spent a lot of time in the water playing with my grandkids who seemed to prefer to climb on my shoulders and have me launch them into the lake over just swimming around. I got them to do some races and breath-holding contests and they were still going strong when I made my way to the beach. Gotta love summertime.

    It was a big week for Apple with the release of their quarterly financial results and the launch of OS 10.8, Mountain Lion. I’ll talk about both a bit later. I am simply amazed that when a company like Apple beats their own goals for profit and sales, posts record sales and earnings, __and__ makes a nearly $9 billion profit on $35 billion in sales for three months, anyone can call it “disappointing.” What an incredibly strong financial report from a company that continues to lead the industry and the world.

    Apple released Mountain Lion from its cage on Wednesday, and naturally I was one of the first to download this $19.99 upgrade to Mac OS X.* It took about five hours due to the other 100,000 people trying to download it at the same time as I was. Once I had completed the 4GB download, installation was a breeze and it took only about 30 minutes to install on my MacBook Pro with Retina display. I will go over some of my first impressions below.

    It is hard to believe we are in the last week in July. I had a friend set up a meeting with me for “next week” and when she said “how about Friday, August 3rd?” I had one of those hyper-time moments. It seems like just a blink of an eye ago that I had gotten my motorcycle out for the first time in the spring!

    __*I had some answering to do to our IT Department, but it was worth it!__

  • Using an External Hard Drive with Time Capsule

    I recently received a tech support call from a customer wondering how to attach an external hard drive to their Time Capsule to expand their storage capability. It is a very simple process to do.

    You’ll first need to format the disk as Mac OS Extended if you’re on a Mac or as FAT32 if you’re running Windows. You’ll need to do the formatting from your computer as the AirPort Utility doesn’t support formatting external disks.

    Step two is to plug it into the USB port on the back of your Time Capsule. You can also plug in a powered USB hub into that port and gain multiple connections into your Time Capsule.

    Step three, launch the AirPort Utility, click on your Time Capsule, then enter your devices password. You should see an icon on the top of the window called Disks. If you click on that you can set access privileges for that external drive.

    Your drive should now show up in finder as a shared network volume.

  • CD/DVD Burning with Ease

    I’ve always been a little frustrated with burning CDs or DVDs on my Mac, as it’s never been the simplest process…especially DVDs. With the slow migration away from physical media, the need to address this issue doesn’t really make the cut with Apple. I understand that physical media is on the decline, but I still use CDs and DVDs on a fairly regular basis, as I’m sure others do as well.

    I came across a brilliantly simple application recently, and I’ve been using it for all my CD/DVD burning needs ever since. The name of the application is “*Burn,*”:http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html and it’s as simple to use as it sounds. Need to burn an audio CD? Drag the desired song files into the application, arrange them in whatever order you’d like, insert a CD-R, and click Burn.

    It’s the same idea with a DVD. Any time I’ve wanted to burn a DVD, it’s pretty much the same reason each time: To get the video onto a DVD-R so that it can be played in a DVD player. That’s it. I don’t need a menu or fancy graphics. Burn does just that, and I love it.

    Download Burn “*here,*”:http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html and enjoy disc-burning simplicity at its finest.
