Kibbles & Bytes Blog

  • Happy Tuesday,

While Don mentioned this already in last week’s issue of “*Kibbles & Bytes*”:http://blog.smalldog.com/kibbles, I thought I’d mention it here, too, as a good number of Tech Tails readers don’t subscribe to Don’s newsletter. Small Dog partnered with “*All Earth Renewables*”:http://www.allearthrenewables.com/ to install a ten-panel photovoltaic array behind the warehouse in Waitsfield that will supply enough power to completely power our flagship South Burlington store–with enough left over to help with Waitsfield’s power consumption as well.

The panels are popping up all over the place in the Mad River Valley, and the installations in flood plains survived the massive spring floods and the even-more-violent Irene flooding in late August. The field behind the warehouse certainly is in a flood plain, and it seems every year the river jumps its banks at least once. Here’s hoping giant chunks of ice steer well clear.

Other planet-friendly projects are in progress, and perhaps the most visible is the switch from fluorescent and incandescent lighting in many offices to LED lighting. I’m hoping to see the energy-hogging streetlight at the entrance switch to LED, too!

There are two specials at the end of this newsletter that aren’t really specials. You’ve always been able to make donations to various charities in the “*smalldog.com shopping cart*”:https://checkout.smalldog.com/cart, but with many new readers and customers I wanted to highlight this in a newsletter. Not only can you make donations through our website, but Small Dog will match individual donations, up to $200, all year long. I selected Planned Parenthood and Doctors Without Borders for the newsletter, but you can see all the charities we support at “*smalldog.com/charity*”:http://www.smalldog.com/charity.

Here’s to some snow, and soon!

As always, thanks for reading, and keep in touch.

    Matt

  • My granddaughter, Khadija, is in a play and sings and acts. She is a talented kid who is getting straight As and is very into the arts. She performs with the Jeh Kulu dance and drum company, plays the slide trombone and now is an actress, too. It will be fun to go see her in the play this weekend.

I hope you have an awesome weekend! Thank you for reading this issue of Kibbles & Bytes!

  • Special: Book(Book) 'Em!

*Twelve South* brings a sense of whimsy–and anachronism–to the Macbook Air, MacBook Pro and iPhone 4/4S with their line of *BookBook* cases. But the BookBook isn’t just about looks–the hardback leather cases protect your laptop or phone while disguising it as a vintage book. A staff favorite, BookBook is both practical and fun: BookBook for iPhone even doubles as a wallet!

This week we’re offering Kibbles & Bytes readers $10 off BookBook for the 11″ and 13″ MacBook Air and 13″ and 15″ MacBook Pro. Readers will also receive $5 off BookBook for iPhone 4/4S.

  • Special: Rock It Old School

The *iPod classic* is a favorite of many Small Dog employees, not only because of its massive capacity (160GB=approximately 40,000 songs, 200 hours of video or 25,000 photos–or a healthy combination of all three) but also because it is reminiscent of the original iPod. Hence the name.

We think the old-school aesthetic of the *Sony MDR-110LP Open-Air Over-The-Head Headphones* are a great match for the iPod classic. And they sound great, too!

This week only, Kibbles & Bytes readers save $30 on Sony’s MDR-110LP Headphones, originally $35.99–that’s an additional $5 off the already-discounted price–when you order them with a silver or black iPod classic!

    *iPod classic + Sony MDR-110LP Headphones–$255.99 + $4.99 shipping.*

  • Mouthing Off On Siri

Everyone seems to have an opinion on Siri these days, from fanboys and girls to those who find the whole concept a little too sci-fi. (Kudos to you if you’re reading this thinking, “Siri who?”)

Among those who use Siri on their iPhone 4Ss, there has been no shortage of Siri “experiments,” wherein the user tries to see how much she/he (or as Apple often says, “it”) really understands. Written commentary and YouTube videos range from the informative and productive to the smarmy and ridiculous.

Last week, Adam Engst over at TidBits wrote a great response to the phenomenon that’s taken on a life of its own (kind of fitting, huh?). “*Check it out here.*”:http://tidbits.com/article/12653
