  • Smaller nano? Or Better shuffle?

    I’ve heard a lot of mixed responses to the new iPod nano. Whether you love it or hate it, everyone has noticed it. As for myself, I think this is what I’ve wanted in an iPod ever since I got a touch, and now my iPhone. Aside from the classic, all the iPods have been moving away from being just a music player. The touch has its games and apps and even the nano was branching out with its camera. I think this is a fantastic return to the original idea of the iPod as the most convenient way to carry your music.

    The new even smaller form factor is fantastic with the added clip. This new model can be used for running or working out without the need for an armband. Granted, you could always use a shuffle in the same way. With the touch screen addition though, I now have more options if I want to change my music mid-workout. I especially like that the Genius functionality is supported so I can create excellent mixes on the fly.

    Really, if you think of this as an “update” to the previous iPod nano, then you will probably be disappointed. There are in fact fewer features, though the pedometer and FM receiver are still there, and it feels like less of a gadget and more like a cheap accessory. But if you think of it as a shuffle that has grown up and earned a nice touch screen display and a lot of the functionality of its bigger cousins, this is the best iPod ever.

  • Stop Individual Email Addresses From Auto-completing

    I often rely on Mail’s ability to auto-complete an email address based on the first few letters of the address. Sometimes, though, this comes back to bite me. A few days ago, I sent a message to a colleague’s personal Gmail address, and realized that Mail was auto-completing all the emails I wrote to the wrong address.

    I asked Rebecca if it was possible to remove individual addresses from the cache of previously-used addresses, and we couldn’t find a solution. She pointed out that this task was very easy in Entourage, so I knew Apple had to have a way to do it.

    Quick sleuthing in the Mail menus led me to the Previous Recipients item under Window. There, I saw a list of every address I’d sent mail to in the past years. The Previous Recipients window has a search box to easily locate individual addresses and buttons to remove an address or add it to your Address Book.

  • Happy Tuesday,

    Construction continues as we come closer and closer to the October 9th grand opening of our “new store.”:http://www.smalldog.com/nh The repair facility is walled in, the floors are done, ethernet and electricity wiring is complete, and the benches are scheduled to arrive next week. We still must get the actual networking gear set up–routers, switches, and the like–and configure servers to host backups, restoration images, and netboot services to ensure efficient diagnostics and quality repairs.

    The foliage seems early this year. I drove to the southern Hudson Valley this weekend to visit my mother, and while the leaves here in Vermont are nearly past peak, the leaves south of here are most definitely in their peak. The delightful display of colors almost made the six hundred mile round trip enjoyable!

    I look forward to meeting some of you at our grand opening celebration October 9th. Check out our Facebook page and RSVP to the event for a chance to win cool stuff!

    As always, thanks for reading, and keep in touch.

  • I am hosting a party this weekend for my mom’s 90th birthday at my house up on Prickly Mountain. My mom has been one of the most positive influences in my life and it will be fun to celebrate this milestone birthday with her.

    I asked her what she wanted for her special day and even though she has a MacBook that she uses all the time, she said she wanted an iPad to keep her mind sharp. I tried to tell her that it’s tough to sharpen her razor-sharp wit and wisdom but I think Hapy and I might just have to see what she can do with the latest technology.

    Happy Birthday Mom! You can send her birthday wishes at “lucille@smalldog.com.”:mailto:lucille@smalldog.com

  • Grace Mayer's Famous Apple Pie Recipe

    Back by popular request (well, it’s that time of year up here), here is Grace’s famous apple pie recipe. For this, she uses McIntosh apples, and it’s sure to please everyone!

    *CRUST*

    * 2 cups flour
    * 1/4 teaspoon salt
    * 2 tablespoons very cold butter
    * Grated rind 1/2 lemon
    * 2 eggs
    * 2 tablespoons ice water

    Place the flour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Cut the butter into small bits and add to flour mixture. Using your fingers, cut in the butter until it has the texture of coarse cornmeal. Add the lemon rind. Separate the eggs and set the whites aside. Beat the yolks with the water and add to the mixture, stirring quickly with a fork.

    Gather the dough into a ball and place in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.

    *FILLING*

    * 8-12 McIntosh Apples
    * 1 tablespoon butter
    * 1/2 cut brown sugar
    * 1 tablespoon flour
    * 1 teaspoon cinnamon

    Take one quarter of the dough and put it back in the refrigerator. The remaining piece will be the bottom crust. Roll out the crust between two pieces of wax paper. The crust should be as round as possible and should fit into the pie plate with the edges hanging over.

    Carefully peel the wax paper off one side and lightly lay the paper back on. Flip the dough over and carefully peel the wax paper off this side. Place in the pie plate and carefully peel off the remaining paper. Fit the dough into the plate and cut off any extra from the edges.

    Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Pare the apples and cut them into thick slices. One apple should yield only about 8-10 slices. Place the sliced apples into the crust. Dot the top with the butter. Sprinkle the brown sugar, flower and cinnamon over the top. Set aside.

    Roll out the remaining dough between two new pieces of wax paper. Make this piece as square as possible. Peel the paper off the bottom crust. Use a fork to flatten the edges.

    Brush the top of the pie with the leftover egg white and sprinkle lightly with some sugar. Place in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes. Watch the pie for the last five minutes. It may need a little more or less time. depending on your oven. When it is evenly browned, remove and cool before slicing.

  • TopTen.plist #6: Top 10 Vermont Apples!

    To celebrate the kickoff of the fourth annual Apples to iPods event here in Vermont (and the fourth that we’ve been a part of), I have apples on the brain. Not Macs right now (unless you’re taking about the tart McIntosh variety), but sweet, juicy apples.

    We’re headed into prime picking season, and all of us here at Small Dog look forward to some fresh local flavor! So, without further ado, here are my top ten apple varieties that we’ll see in the Vermont orchards this year:

    # *McIntosh*
    Described as the “quintessential New England apple,” the McIntosh proves to be excellent for most things, either on its own or baked into dessert deliciousness.
    # *Tolman Sweet*
    Originally found in Massachusetts in the late 1700s, the Tolman Sweet is touted for (of all things) its sweetness. It’s a favorite for cooking and most notably used in applesauce, since the natural sweetness lends itself so well to unsweetened varieties.
    # *Fameuse/Snow*
    These fine-textured apples have their origins largely in the Lake Champlain regions. Right now is prime ripening time, as these soft, juicy and very sweet apples are best in late September to early October.
    # *Jonamac*
    These are a blend of a reddish-pink over greenish base color. Best in early to mid-September, these are excellent dessert apples.
    # *Spartan*
    These are a tad firmer than a McIntosh, with a crisp, fine-textured, juicy and flavorful taste. Spartans are perfect to store as they keep well.
    # *Northern Spy*
    No, these were not named after “Ed’s pup.”:http://www.smalldog.com/contact#thepups Originally found in upstate New York, Northern Spys have a dark purplish-red color over a greenish-yellow base, with “broad, short, broken, bright red stripes.” They’re firm with a sweet flavor.
    # *Liberty*
    These are described as a “quality dessert apple” with a crisp, juicy flavor. They’re ripening now in late September.
    # *Melba*
    Another great dessert apple with a firm, crisp, fine-textured flesh and a “refreshing, vinous flavor.”
    # *Honeycrisp*
    These are a favorite around here as well, with a very firm texture and sweet crunch. Ed maintains that these make fantastic caramel apples!
    # *Golden Delicious*
    These, for me, are a nostalgic apple. Some say (cough… my husband …cough) that they’re “too soft,” but I say they’re perfectly sweet and fantastically good with some extra sharp Vermont cheddar!

    If you’re anywhere near Vermont over the next couple of months, be sure to check out the Apples to iPods event, which kicked off yesterday at “Shelburne Orchards!”:http://www.shelburneorchards.com/nicks_corner/shelburne-orchards/ If you find a wooden apple in one of the 24 participating Vermont orchards, you could win an iPod or even an iPad!

  • VLC for iPad Hits the App Store

    On Monday, developer Applidium released their iPad version of VLC Media Player. Like its desktop counterpart, VLC for iPad is a versatile and high quality media playback application.

    The biggest draw of the iPad version of the player is that it essentially eliminates the need for users to convert their video to iPad suitable resolutions and formats. Though it is not compatible with every format (we had trouble with a .flv file in our initial test) the app does significantly broaden the iPad’s playback capabilities.

    If you have existing video files on your Mac that you haven’t had the time to convert for on-the-go viewing, VLC should handle the existing file types without issue.

    According to the developer, a version for the iPhone and iPod touch is currently in the works, though a tentative release date has not been set.
