I have been hosting phone bank parties for Bernie Sanders at my house as we head into the first caucuses and primaries. It is fun talking to folks out in Iowa and now New Hampshire to see who they are supporting and to tell them about the Senator from Vermont. I like being involved and feel if you are not involved, informed and voting you do sacrifice your right to complain about the results.

  • Apple's Not The Only Game In Town

    I have the pleasure of being able to not only work behind the scenes here at Small Dog, but also on the front line with our customers. With Apple everything is designed to work together. iCloud can sync all your information across multiples devices, from your iPad to iPhone to your computer. “**Handoff**”:https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18754?locale=en_US allows you to start a project on your iPad and then with a quick tab, pick up that project on your computer. Wanting to show your friends the pictures from your weekend trip to the mountains? With photo stream it doesn’t matter what Apple device you’ve picked up, your photos will be there. Have a great home video of your child or grandchild and just have to show everyone who came to Friday night dinner? No problem. With the Apple TV you can airplay that video and save yourself from passing your phone around the room for everyone to see. Another benefit? Apple devices last a long time! I have been using the original iPad mini for four years now and each week I interact with customers who are also using iPads that are two or three years old with no issues.

    In addition to all the integration, we’ve seen price drops for the iPads over the last several years as well. No longer do you need to spend $500 or more for an iPad.   • Hey Dora, Follow Orders!

    Last week we talked about how to activate and use dictation to write emails and documents but there is a lot more that you can do. I keep thinking about Scotty from Star Trek when he went back in time and was “**confronted with a Mac Plus**”:https://youtu.be/LkqiDu1BQXY?t=1m8s. He picked up the mouse as natural as can be and said “computer…”. That time is coming and Dictation Commands are already built into your operating system.

    Once you have dictation activated you can activate dictation commands by going to the Accessibility system preference.

    * Choose Accessibility from System Preferences.

    * Choose Dictation from the list on the left side of the Accessibility pane.

    * Click the Dictation Commands button. You can see a list of available commands in the Dictation Commands sheet.

    * A starting set of commands are enabled by default. Additional speakable items like “Open document” and “Click item” are available by enabling advanced commands using these next steps:

    * Select (check) the option to “Enable advanced commands” in the Dictation Commands sheet that appears.

    * Click Done.

    After you have enabled advanced commands, you can also create your own commands by clicking the Add Command (+) button. This lets you link a spoken phrase to an app, a menu item, a keyboard shortcut, or an Automator workflow.

    You have enabled Dictation Commands and now you can speak any of the items in this list to perform the related action. Press the Fn key twice, then say a command to make it happen, such as “Search Spotlight for the Cubs score” or “select sentence” or “new document”. Give it a try and pretty soon you will be just like Scotty and the Mac Plus.

    As a shortcut, you can speak the command “Show commands” to see a list of the commands you can say.
